Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to an ambitious new feature film centered on NBA legend Kobe Bryant, but it’s not a traditional biopic. Titled With the 8th Pick, the film will explore the behind-the-scenes drama of the two weeks leading up to the 1996 NBA Draft. The screenplay, which has been compared to cinematic thrillers like Moneyball and Air, focuses on the moment that nearly changed basketball history.

The film’s plot centers on the New Jersey Nets, who held the eighth pick and were on the verge of drafting the teenage phenom. It explores the internal struggles of Nets’ general manager John Nash and coach John Calipari, who were a single decision away from landing Bryant. This film, written by Alex Sohn and Gavin Johannsen, is being produced by Tim and Trevor White, the team behind the Oscar-winning film King Richard.
