Design platform Basic.Space is set to launch its shoppable design event “Design.Space” in Los Angeles later this month, bringing with it a selection of archival and newly commissioned pieces from design masters and exciting contemporaries alike.

Taking place at the Pacific Design Center on March 29 and 30, Design. Space defines itself as bridging the gap between the “familiarity of a department store” and the “world-class culture of an art and design fair”. Pieces are curated to suit the contemporary design collector, with the likes of Max Lamb and Sabine Marcelis both showcasing works.

“The definition of luxury is changing and design is now at the forefront of what everyone’s excited about,” says Jesse Lee, the founder of Basic.Space, who also acquired the Design Miami platform in 2023. “Design.Space is a simple concept—taking the best of Basic.Space and Design Miami to create a fun IRL-to-URL shopping experience.”

Across the space, large-scale installations will be paired alongside collections of smaller objects. There will be a number of exclusives available too, among them an original gas station that was designed by Jean Prouvé in 1969.

“Originally designed by Jean Prouvé for the oil company Total, this gas station represents the pinnacle of his ability to merge design, innovation, and structural efficiency,” the fair’s release reads. “The Gas Station remains a milestone in the history of industrial and modular architecture.”

Other highlights will include 50 bright red armchairs by Max Lamb; and the Enorme Telephone by Ettore Sottsass and David Kelley.

The chair designed by Rotterdam-based Sabine Marcelis for Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum will be specifically available in a shade titled “Lavender Frost”, while objects designed by Willo Perron for Stockholm’s NO GA label will be available in the US for the first time.

Elsewhere, a sofa that is the result of a collaboration between Paulin Paulin Paulin, Parley for the Oceans, and Christo and Jeanne-Claude will be made in a limited-edition run of eight pieces. “Expect to discover something old and new, with style and taste over trend and hype,” Lee adds.

Design.Space is taking place on March 29 and 30. Head to the event’s website to find out more.
