Paris-based design studio Waiting For Ideas has unveiled its first-ever vinyl turntable, modeled after the forward-thinking aesthetic and modern materiality of its furniture, objects, and spaces.

Founded in 2021 by designer Jean-Baptiste Anotin, Waiting For Ideas works at the intersection of art and design to create “visually striking and thought-provoking” pieces and installations. For its inaugural turntable, the studio aimed to create a meditative listening experience by stripping back the design with a monolithic makeup that utilizes a solid block of aluminum.

Simplifying the functions of the device, Waiting For Ideas designed the piece with no control center or tone arm, and uses advanced technology to automatically detect the record speed once inserted. All users need to do to listen is simply place the vinyl upside down, connect, and hit play. To make for a complete listening station, a custom-made pair of speakers is designed for dynamic configuration options, with the ability to be stacked with the player on top, or side by side like a traditional set-up.

As of late, unique turntable and speaker releases have picked up as designers are increasingly using these functional devices as canvases to explore new forms and materials. Collaborations like HELIOT EMIL x Nocs Design’s MONOLITH speaker and Teenage Engineering x John Lennon’s OB-4 Interactive Speaker share similar details like chrome finishes and monolithic shapes. Elsewhere, emerging NY-based brand Silence Please is creating contemporary Hi-Fi speakers with gramophone-like monitors.

Custom orders for Waiting For Ideas’ PP-1 turntable are available now via the brand’s web store.
