Levi’s Vintage Clothing has released a faithful reproduction of the Menlo Cossack Leather Jacket, famously worn by Albert Einstein, to honor his scientific legacy.
Einstein is thought to have acquired the original jacket around 1935, coinciding with his immigration to the United States and his process of obtaining his citizenship. The original garment achieved historical status when it was acquired by Levi Strauss & Co. at a Christie’s auction in 2016, where it was notably said to retain a faint aroma of sweet pipe tobacco.
The re-issuing this time features a design true to the original, including a cropped, boxy fit, distinctive rounded collar and cuffs and brass buckles on the side fastening straps. To commemorate the historic auction, the reproduction is strictly limited to 800 hand-numbered pieces worldwide. Each jacket comes with special packaging that includes a replica of the original auction paddle (Number 97) and a photo of Einstein wearing the garment.
Priced at ¥165,000 JPY (approx. $1,060 USD), this limited-edition jacket is now available at select Levi’s stores. Check out the product images above.
