This Woodland Cabin is Designed to be the Ultimate Retreat
Located in the forests of Quebec, the “Selenite” cabin is complete with a full spa experience.
Montreal-based design studio NatureHumaine recently worked alongside a young couple to create a woodland cabin retreat, located in the a forest in Quebec.
With the brief of creating a space that would be the ultimate place to switch-off, the architects took inspiration from the name given to the project by the clients: “selenite”, which refers to the crystalline mineral also known as “moonstone”, known for its soothing properties.
This overarching concept is visible through both the form and color of the cabin – but also in its intended use. For the couple, it was paramount that the space was universally accessible for visitors, particularly for those with reduced mobility.
“Like a sanctuary in the middle of the forest, it was set quite early in the process that the lodge would have a formally monochrome white appearance to reinforce the idea of selenite and its restful quality,” the architects said.

To achieve this, they designed the house as a white cube, creating the crystal-like shape through the use of sloping roofs. Skylights are used across the property, bringing in natural light but also allowing views of the changing skies above.
Ensuring ultimate relaxtion is achieved, a steam bath, sauna, spa, cold bath and salt room were installed; lighting is synced up to circadian rhythms; and guided meditation sessions can be experienced in any of the rooms.
When it came to selecting materials – wellbeing was at the forefont of the architects’ minds too. Insulation comes in the form of hemp wool, while all paints, stains and interior finishes are free of any harmful chemicals.
“Some small projects have big ambitions. This is the case of Selenite,” the architects say. “The clients had wanted to work with architects for several years to realize their vision combining ecological architecture, wellness and a unique resort experience.”
