Brooklyn-based architectural firm nARCHITECTS has unveiled a special project to be used by the founders’ family. The CLT House is a lakeside property in Dutchess County, which was designed to reduce intervention in the local environment during construction and long afterward.

To minimize site and neighborhood disturbance house’s prefabricated concrete foundation was installed in less than one week and the structure, made completely out of cross-laminated timber (CLT), was installed in 11 days. Geothermal wells and a radiant floor system aid heating and cooling, and on the roof, panels harvest enough solar energy for daily use. Additionally, the architects set the house 200 feet from the lake to protect the lake ecosystem, removed invasive water plants, and introduced healthy local species to the lot.

Aside from the warming visual qualities of the material, CLT is an increasingly popular material for its ecological benefits, efficiency, and fire-resistant properties. Elsewhere on the exterior, nARCHITECTS deployed the oldest exterior wood cladding technique used by colonial settlers for a rustic contrast.

Large windows provide ample natural lighting inside, reflecting warm hues from the wooden surfaces, while skylights cast unique shadows throughout the day. In contrast to the monolithic interior finishes, a bright green industrial staircase adds a contemporary pop of color to the design.
