Porter’s “ALL NEW TANKER” Pop-up at Packer Offers Eco-conscious Innovation
The 40th-anniversary line uses a novel plant-based nylon to modernize Porter’s classic bag styles.
In celebration of its 40th anniversary, Porter has landed at NJ-based Packer for an ALL NEW TANKER pop-up. The temporary shop-in-shop introduces the brand’s familiar silhouettes from the original Tanker line in never-before-seen sustainable materials like plant-based nylons.
The Tanker collection, launched in 1983, took major aesthetic inspiration from the US Air Force uniform. The classic messenger-style Tanker bag was made of nylon mimicking MA-1 flight jackets worn by fighters and made in army green and black with bright orange linings. This pop-up, however, marks the first time Porter has used a plant-based nylon, derived from corn and the castor oil plant, in a mass line.
Porter tapped their day-one craftsmen at Komaxon, who dyed the ‘83 line, to create new bold Iron Blue and Olive Green shades for the range, which are applied over 40 different styles. The Japanese dye house has developed a meticulous cllor matching process that rests heavily on they eye of skilled color specialists.
With Packer being founded more than a century ago in Yonkers, NY, the launch at the store falls right in-line with the Porter’s emphasis on its heritage for this collection. Furthermore, the collaboration nods to the long tradition of creative exchange between Japanese and American brands.
The ALL NEW TANKER collection is available now at Packer and the pop-up will be active at the Packer flagship store in Teaneck, NJ until October 5th.
