A Closer Look at Gagà Laboratorio’s Labormatic Watches
Arriving in Cinquanta and Bauhaus colorways.
Italian watch brand, GaGà Milano is known for its crafting unconventional timepieces that embody a Dandy aesthetics and lifestyle. Today, the company is launching its new arm of horological offerings under the name of Gagà Laboratorio. This new venture marks founder Ruben Tomella’s latest journey in independent watchmaking. While GaGà Milano’s watches are characterized by their eccentric and pocket-watch-like cases, Gagà Laboratorio aims to appeal to a broader audience with high-end, luxurious and refined timepieces.
In inaugurating the Gagà Laboratorio name, the brand has debuted the Labormatic model. The watch is reminiscent of the Manuale from the GaGà Milano brand but exhibits a slimmer, smoother and much more curved profile. According to Mo Coppoletta, the art director for the new watches, he conceptualized the Labormatic’s design together with Tomella. “I envisioned the design of the Labormatic within a contemporary post-war context, inspired by the innovative spirit and vibrant energy of the 1950s and 60s in Italy, particularly in the industrial cities of the North,” explained Coppoletta.
Two distinct colorways are offered, the Cinquanta and Bauhaus, each sporting a different design for minute indications. Cinquanta gives off an exuberant vibe of the ’50s, sporting a sage green dial that evokes a scenery of vintage Vespa motorbikes in the streets of Milan. Meanwhile, Bauhaus owes its name to the renowned artistic movement, taking on a black and gunmetal-esque palette that exudes industrial elegance. Both variants follow the same architecture, each deriving the colors, finishings as well as material characteristics from the eras they’re inspired from, bringing together something new and contemporary, but also imbued with historical cues.
Composed of 7 parts, the watch case measures 42mm in diameter and 13.3mm in thickness. In Latin, “labor” symbolizes industriousness, enterprise and effort — facets that are represented in the watch’s automatic LJP-G1000 movement, which can be viewed through a sapphire caseback. The hour is indicated through a 12 o’clock window, while minutes are told via the central second disc on the dial. Synonymous with GaGà Milano’s creations, the new Labormatic references are fitted with a steel cabochon crown in 12 o’clock direction, complete with hand-made saffiano leather straps.
Gagà Laboratorio’s Labormatic comes with a price point of 3,900 CHF (approx. $4,604 USD) and will be avaibale through the brand’s authorized retailers. Take a closer look at the timepieces in the gallery above. For more information, visit Gagà Laboratorio’s official website.
