Made by Choice x Snarkitecture's LIEKSA Chair Brings New York Design to Finnish Furniture
Created using a Finnish pressed bending technique.
Two studios have come together to create a one-of-a-kind lounge chair inspired by the natural world. Furniture maker Made By Choice runs its studio out of Halikko, a small municipality in Finland. The New York-based Snarkitecture, meanwhile, is a fluid design and product firm that espouses an ethos of “not art, not architecture.”
Designed by Snarkitecture and produced by Made By Choice, the LIEKSA chair is named after the city in Finland from which Snarkitecture designer Alex Mustonen hails.
Converging the design aesthetics of New York and Finland, the resulting piece is industrial and functional yet still warmly minimalist. The LIEKSA comes in the form of a standard dining chair and a lounge chair, the latter of which is wider and the seat sits closer to the floor, though both of the chairs still stand 31 inches (787 mm tall).
After Snarkitecture made mock-ups of the chair, Made By Choice used a Finnish technique called “pressed bending,” also known as steam bending. The wood is heated up to slowly bend into a shape, remaining as a singular piece, rather than nailing multiple pieces together.
The Made By Choice x Snarkitecture LIEKSA dining chair is priced at $1,242 USD, while the lounge chair runs for $1,742 USD.
