Take a Look at Apple’s New Store in Shanghai

Apple has opened the doors of its new post in Shanghai’s Jing’an District. Built around a circular public plaza, the development was helmed by the global architecture firm Foster + Partners.
Beyond the store itself, the firm built the plaza as a means of offering a space that connects the famous Jing’an Temple and Jing’an Park. Both are located on opposite sides of Nanjing Road.
It’s expected that many pedestrians, even those not visiting the store, will pass through. The space is composed of two main levels with the store situated under a sort of shield. Overhead, a landscaped skywalk features greenery and benches for the public to rest. From the skywalk, pedestrians also get an idyllic view of the Jing’an Temple.
“We are delighted to have been given this great responsibility to create this transformative project for Shanghai,” Foster + Partners’ Head of Studio Stefan Behling said. “Our design reimagines the original plaza as a vibrant new public space, which provides places to sit and relax, drawing people in and respectfully enhancing the setting for the beautiful Jing’an Temple.”
For the interior walls and floor of the store, architects sourced Padang Light stone, a type of granite, to create a sense of fluidity with the outdoors. A wood ceiling and accents add a touch of warmth.
The Jing’an store marks Apple’s eighth location in Shanghai and is open to the public now.
