John Elliott’s Fall 2024 Collection Transports You to Motor Valley

For his latest collection, John Elliott made the trek from his native California to Modena, Italy. A small city in the Emilia-Romagna region, Modena is perhaps best known as being the country’s “Motor Valley.” It’s the closest city to the headquarters for Maserati, Lamborghini and Pagani.

The influence of sports cars looms over the designer’s approach to his Fall 2024 collection. Elliott has long been hailed as the man who made sweatpants “high fashion,” as more than one headline proclaims.

With his new collection, however, the menswear designer has elevated his approach with pieces more suitable for the European lifestyle. Fits are relaxed and mimic Italian sportswear but are notably more sophisticated, even while maintaining a relaxed fit.

In his first look, Elliott layers a zip-neck fleece under a cashmere hoodie, paired with black boots and racing pants. Another sees him layer a black turtleneck and a springtime-colored green fleece. Worn leather jackets, oversized sunglasses and loose pants, made out of denim and leather, are plenty.

Elliott told Vogue that the collection was born from his visit to the Maserati factory, where seemingly everyone sported stylish and versatile looks capable of transitioning from the workplace and to a night out.

“I realized the people who are building Ferraris and Maseratis are some of the most highly-skilled, most interesting people in the world,” he said. “Just looking at how these guys were dressing. I got very inspired by this way of life.”
