Netflix has announced the official global release date for its upcoming Korean sci-fi thriller, Parasyte: The Grey. Premiering on April 5, the series is a whole new adaptation of Hitoshi Iwaaki’s critically acclaimed manga Parasyte.

The manga originally ran from 1989 -1994 and was well-received for its complex character-building and underlying philosophical themes, all masked under a façade of body horror and wacky humor. Throughout the last decade, the source material has been adapted into a successful TV anime, along with two live-action movies that were nominated for Japanese film awards.

Parasyte: The Grey takes place in modern-day Korea and follows the narrative of a fresh cast of characters, namely a group of people that fights parasitic creatures under the name of  “Team Grey.” The new series is directed by Yeon Sang-ho, who’s known to have a knack for creating compelling zombie-frenzy projects such as Hellbound and Train to Busan.

Speaking on this project, director Yeon says, “In my twenties, Parasyte was a staple for those of us who were passionate about manga and animation. Having the opportunity to build upon it and create something new is not only a great honor, but also a dream come true from my younger years.”
