Vaquera FW24 Defies the Woes of Capitalism

With punkish silhouettes and dollar-signed prints covered in “FAKE” lettering, the New York label’s fashions offered countercultural commentary on the concept of money.

Vaquera’s Fall/Winter 2024 manifesto boils down to one word: money. This season, designers Patric DiCaprio and Bryn Taubensee took a countercultural lens to currency, designing their own dollar-signed print featuring countless U.S. bills covered in Eiffel Tower illustrations, red “X” motifs, heart stamps, lipstick kisses and “FAKE” lettering. In mode, the punkish brand’s hero visual aims to defy the woes of capitalism, amidst a seductive range of form-flattering silhouettes.

The wealth-confronting graphic covers a sultry array of draped dresses, fitted button-downs, ruffled chest pieces, formal ties and chunky belts. Juxtaposing the print’s literal messaging, fishnet bandanas, faux-fur fencing masks, combative belts and thick leather gloves pose more symbolic rebellious attitudes.

Workwear gown skirts are torn away in several places; jeans-skirt hybrids engulf the body in small-top, big-bottom ensembles, and bulky Chanel-inspired leather jackets and skirts are finished with satin money scarves. Look by look, Vaquera subverts traditional garment structures with a strong, anarchistic tone.

Cut-out leotards, veiling dresses and cropped bombers leave the chest exposed, while denim underwear, chap skirts and ruffle dresses show leg. Giant hats and faux-fur face wraps conceal wearers’ identities, while hip bumps and donut skirts manipulate the human shape. Here, the contrast between confident exposés and strategic secrecy puts a thrill in Vaquera’s next-season identity.
