Giancarlo Cipri's Mail Courier Bag Is a Witty Reimagination of the Flat Mail Tray
Marking the first wearable accessory from the inventive New York-hailing product designer.
The Mail Courier Bag – a new invention from product designer Giancarlo Cipri, best known as Gee – is a familiar sight for anyone who recently paid a trip to their local post office.
An inventive reconception of the iconic flat mail tray used by the USPS, Gee looked to the object as a point of departure for a wearable accessory. The resulting Mail Courier Bag is a boxy tote with some witty typography stamped across it, capable of being worn as either cross-body or on one’s shoulder.
The bag comes in white and black colorways, each emblazoned with a warning that it’s for “personal use only.” It also bears a subtly placed line cheekily reading, “For anything but mail.”
“The bag is a result of observing objects and patterns. Its design pays homage to the Flat Mail Tray which I saw – sometimes stacked fourteen high – on my way to school,” Gee said in a statement. “The trays are commonplace, yet intriguing in their marriage of typography, graphic and product design. I try to implement these disciplines within my work, and hope it is apparent within the Mail Courier Bag.”
An alum of the School of Visual Arts’ MFA program, Gee’s work finds itself at the intersection of fashion, graphic design and product design. He approaches what some would consider an everyday object with a not-too-serious philosophical outlook and an eye for recontextualization in various mediums.
The Mail Courier Bag will launch to the public with a pop-up at FORMah Gallery on Friday, February 23. An online release will follow on Gee’s website.
