Vancouver-based outdoor and lifestyle retailer HAVEN has unveiled a line of handmade homeware pieces with Apapacho. Together Haven and the Mexican design studio have produced a duo of contemporary home objects using traditional Mexican craftsmanship and native stone materials.

Since Apapacho focuses on crafting art objects deeply rooted in its Mexico City heritage, materials were limited to resources native to the country including clay, onyx, marble and volcanic rock. As always, the studio enlisted local craftsmen to carve out each piece, whose tools and workroom can be seen in the gallery above. Apapacho credits master stone artisan Toño González, who used ancestral techniques to shape the materials into their final refined forms.

The first piece is a dual-function bookend/vase with a six-point fluted shape and a small cylindrical hole in the center. The other piece, “the valuables box” is a small rectangular container with a removable lid, which boasts a miniaturized fluted texture on the topside. Together the two objects are a functional pair that are at once, modern in their sensibilities, yet carry a long lineage of cultural history.

In HAVEN’s words, the joint collection represents a shared ethos between the collaborators: “creating objects that transcend function to become enduring works of art, embodying the spirit of collaboration and cultural dialogue.”

On Friday, November 22 HAVEN will hold a special pop-up at its Vancouver location to launch the official release of the collaboration.
