With Fall/Winter 2024 fully underway, much of the world is experiencing the weather that comes with it. Whether it’s due to bone-shaking chills or significant precipitation, outdoor-ready clothing is on the mind of more than just gorpcore enthusiasts this time of year. For those looking to brave the elements, HBX has brought forth five new brands that specialize in technical apparel — SAN SAN GEAR, ROA, Hiking Patrol, FFFPOSTALSERVICE and J EONGL I, HBX website today.

SAN SAN GEAR

South Korea’s SAN SAN GEAR continues to bring new life to the streetwear scene with its ever-evolving range of functional garments crafted for exploration across a multitude of settings. Founded by Sang-yeop Lee in 2019, the brand’s early penchant for technical design coincided neatly with the global rise of gorpcore, allowing it to swiftly establish an international foothold within fashion. For FW24, this has been expressed with a mix of new and returning silhouettes. Dynamic linework and slick paneling pairs with ample functionality as designs like the Fleece Jacket offer warmth while delivering corduroy detailing that sets it apart from the rest. The brand’s knack for versatile pants is on full display once again as the Double Knee Dart Pant sports precise adjustments to craft a distinct silhouette while the Covering Pocket Pants V2 builds atop one of the brand’s existing designs, incorporating paneling that allows for new color blocking. Its accessories, while many have already sold out, are highlighted by laser-cut caps, the sizable Pocket Cross Bag and the brand’s unique Hoodie Scarf.

ROA

Italian label ROA may be new to HBX this season, but it’s a familiar face to gorp fans. Drawing inspiration from outdoor gear, its boundary-pushing footwear has evolved into a ready-to-wear line that involves advanced work with materials and forward-thinking shapes. Its seasonal array delivers favored styles like the Katharina sneaker in all-black with a Vibram Megagrip sole. This stealthy approach has also been employed across the bulky Andreas Boots and low profile Cingino sneakers. On the apparel side, the Smooth Down Jacket stands tall with its billowing structure sporting a lightweight micro-ripstop nylon shell, heavy goose down and an autumnal palette of olive hues. The Packable Wind Jacket contrasts with this by offering a featherlight micro ripstop nylon shell that is sheer and easy to stow. Whether you’re looking for versatile pants or shorts, the Klopman Chino has you covered in both options as it favors a poly-cotton blend Klopman fabric and detachable webbing belt to ensure just the right fit.

Hiking Patrol

Hiking Patrol began as an online platform for covering the very brands it joins on this list. Guided by Wai Tsui since 2019, the Norwegian-based brand has evolved into offering its own perspective on the industry, presenting exploration-ready looks that channel the serenity of nature. After launching on HBX with its Diemme collaboration, many of the brand’s most flexible styles are included throughout the FW24 range. Three colorways of the Down Jacket all boast a grade three waterproof fabric that is enhanced by 1000mm water repellent treatment. The absence of branding is consistent throughout the collection, however, the lively Printed Fleece Jacket does feature the brand’s mascot in its all-over jacquard print. Its Windproof Hooded Jacket and Trouser set cuts through gusts while being equipped with a microfleece lining for warmth. Lastly, its Light Down Hat and Tech Cap maintain a function-first approach as both utilize waterproof and windproof properties.

FFFPOSTALSERVICE

Step into a “never-ending sci-fi motion picture” with FFFPOSTALSERVICE. The Seoul-based brand’s cinematic universe has traversed many settings already — exploring everything from frightful forests to the Great Pyramid of Giza. Taking cues from tactical aesthetics, its contemporary cuts are backed by functional detailing like cargo pockets and zipper-closed segments that hide inner layers and this year’s lineup is no different. The Hooded Parachute Bomber V2 Jacket evolves its predecessor by enlisting a sharper camouflage and paneling that flows across the garment with ease. Elbow slits and a unique hood shape further differentiate this standout piece which is complemented by the Wide Back Zip Cargo Pants that sport the same vintage fabric and camouflage. Its bestselling Flare Cargo Pants don the newest V4 build as oversized pockets add dimension to the lateral of the knee.

J EONGL I

Fresh out of Seoul South Korea, J EONGL I puts function and reliability at the core of its creations. To achive this goal, designer Jeong Li rethinks classic styles with new materials, blending history and technology for pieces that, in the brand’s own words are inspired by cities where “buildings, forest and nature coexist.” This ethos is further communicated in the brand’s pinwheel logo, which encapsulates how J EONGL I keeps true to its core while looking to expand in various directions. For the winter 2024 season, this is encapsulated by a set of technical jackets and pants in various fabrications, as well as an overshirt that may be the most seamless blend of casual wear and techwear of the bunch.
