A rare example of the 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione is soon to hit the auction block via RM Sotheby’s. The vehicle, designed by Sergio Scaglietti, the “father” of icons like the GTO, 275, Monza and Testa Rossa is a testament to an exceptional crossroads of form and function.

The 250 GT SWB marked a significant shift in Ferrari‘s design approach. Its shorter chassis and the introduction of the 168-type “outside-plug” V-12 engine, combined with four-corner disc brakes, pushed the boundaries of performance and design. This particular model, chassis 1773 GT, is one of just 45 aluminum-bodied Competizione variants produced in 1960.

Aside from or potentially as a result of its engineering prowess, this particular example also boasts a storied history in competitive racing. It made its racing debut at the 1960 12 Hours of Sebring, under the North American Racing Team banner, which saw it finish an impressive 7th overall and 5th in its class. Piloted by George Arents and Bill Kimberly, prominent figures in the US racing scene, this Ferrari swiftly established its pedigree.

Later owned by multiple Le Mans class winner Bob Grossman, 1773 GT continued to accumulate accolades, including a GT class win at the Nassau Trophy and a close second overall at the Nassau Tourist Trophy behind icon Stirling Moss. It also saw success under the ownership of Bob Hathaway, securing multiple podium finishes.

The car’s journey through various esteemed collections, including those of Nigel Dawes, Tony Smith and Bruce McCaw. In 2014, it joined the renowned Pinnacle Portfolio and underwent a meticulous $700,000 restoration by Motion Products Inc. to its original Giallo paint and Pelle Verde interior.

Ferrari Classiche’s 2023 full Red Book certification confirms the car’s authenticity, retaining its original chassis, engine and rear axle, as well as a correct competition gearbox. Bidding for the vehicle is set to commence in Paris France on Wednesday, January 31 — with estimates set as high as $12,000,000 USD.
