Random Identities FW24 Bends the Rules for Men's Formalwear

Designer Stefano Pilati subverts the classic man’s uniform with dress shorts, sweater dresses and trompe l’oeil T-shirts.

Random Identities, the fashion brainchild of Italian designer Stefano Pilati, is all about empowering the wearer. Take the brand’s logo for instance: it’s a blank canvas, inviting the consumer to “share the authorship” on their owned pieces by personalizing the brand’s signage. In previous seasons, the brand’s collections have existed within the context of voyeurism, highlighting the human form with subversive cuts that mimic the Berliner’s lifestyle. Now, for Fall 2024, Pilati’s menswear serves the punkish modern man, with lifted hemlines, skin-showing bottoms and buttoned-up tops.

Blazers and collared shirts uphold the classic standards of men’s formalwear, but their subversive counterparts challenge tradition with rebellious cuts. In practice, the designer’s latest manifesto sees typical dress trousers become shorts that fall above the knee and comfortable crewneck sweaters mimic dresses in oversized forms. Lux Gillespie, meanwhile, gets credit for the line’s trompe l’oeil T-shirts, which feature illustrations of bow and neckties. There’s a visible departure from gender-conforming silhouettes, in many instances; but overall, the line’s illustrative puffer coats, flannel shirts and velvety pants are built for the contemporary menswear aficionado.

Pilati, who previously served as the creative director for Zegna, Agnono and, most notably, Yves Saint Laurent, says his present-day strategy is based on “reaching and engaging with a specific profile of consumers.” Here, it’s evident that the Random Identities consumer is someone who’s open to bending the men’s style rules in favor of something more liberating.
