“We shouldn’t be scared of subversion.”

For Fall/Winter 2023, Jonathan Anderson of his eponymous brand JW Anderson said “We shouldn’t be scared of subversion.” A case in point is the brand’s Padlock Ankle Boot, which has just arrived online.

When the fashion crowd first saw the shoe in Milan, it made us think about how Anderson frequently plays on abnormality. Put by the designer himself, “It’s working with tensions; this idea that the bag becomes the shoe, the shoe becomes the bag.”

Here, the Padlock Ankle Boot takes this notion literally, using full-grain calf leather for the outer and split-grain sheep leather for the interior to create a luxurious sock-like silhouette. It’s buckled-up with leather straps that are padlocked in silver-toned metal up top, while belt-like buckles appear on the rear, contrasting the full-length zipper and round buckle loop on the front.

The pair is divisive, intriguing, and the perfect example of how Anderson subverts the norm — just as he did with his Wellipets clogs. The Padlock Ankle Boot arrives in black, olive and turquoise, and retails for £845/$950 USD, with delivery expected from September 15, 2023.

In other news, Nike might be bringing the Roshe Run back.
