Through a dimly lit teaser video showing the unmistakable rear of an R32-generation Skyline GT-R, Nissan has unveiled plans for an “R32EV” electrification project. The new initiative is said to have stemmed from an engineer who joined Nissan out of admiration for the GT-R.

“I want to build a more exciting car by adding the latest electrification technology I’m involved with to my favorite car,” the unnamed engineer is quoted saying.

While there’s no news yet on how exactly Nissan will make the conversion, gutting the motorsport icon for an electric drivetrain is sure to stir up controversy. Fellow Japanese automaker Toyota was recently seen crafting hydrogen and electric versions of its nostalgic AE86 series cars. By doing so, customers may shift their perspective on the increasingly electric future, finding beauty in non-combustion racecars as well.

“By combining the car that I love the most with the technology that I think is the best, we can create a car that people around the world will be more excited about,” said the Nissan engineer.

Stay tuned to the Nissan Japan website and socials for more details.
