Scientists at the European Space Agency have shared a new photograph taken using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope.

In the past, the telescope has been used to provide the public with a closer look at star formation, the Sun and a part of the Serpens constellation called the Pillars of Creation. This latest image hones in on a galaxy that looks strikingly similar to the Milky Way.

The telescope’s camera utilizes a powerful form of infrared vision to observe the chemical composition of galaxies so that scientists can get a better idea of when and how these galaxies, and what they contain inside them, formed. This photo was captured using the NIRCam while scientists observed the White Dwarf, a well-known star.

In this image, the galaxy, called LEDA 2046648 and located over a billion light years away, is shown as a large spiral at the bottom center of the image surrounded by smaller, more distant galaxies. Some galaxies aren’t large enough to appear as a spiral in this photo but viewers are lucky to be able to see not only the glowing core of the galaxy but also the star formations that make up its arms.
