Since James Gunn joined DC Studios to be the co-CEO with Peter Safran, the pair have been using their combined efforts to revive the superhero sector at Warner Bros.

In a recently Instagram Threads conversation, the movie director reflected on why the DC Universe has not worked previously and how he exactly felt about cameo appearances. According to Gunn, it is all because of the lack of consistency within the universe that has caused its failure, “One of the problems with DCEU content in the past was there was no real consistency within the universe itself. This never meant – & I never said, as this is how we always envisioned it – all animated & video game content would be in the DCU. I did (& still) say MOST tv & film will be in the DCU with the occasional Elseworld tale (like Matt’s The Batman), but it will have to be exceptional.”

With regards to how he feels about cameo appearances, Gunn was quick to claim that he does not think they are a problem, as long is it does not disrupt the film’s narrative, “That’s fine if it doesn’t disrupt the story. It’s the plot contrivances that develop from a cameo, not the cameo itself.” However, one user commented that the cameso are only a result of directors “having the character appear on screen for 10 seconds to mark a checkbox.” Gunn responded with his own two-cents, “I call that ‘Cameo Porn’ and it has been one of the worst elements of recent superhero films. If a character is in film, they have to have a reason to be there story-wise.” Take a look at what he had to say so far. It remains to be seen how Gunn revamps the universe.
