BAO Unites With Allday Goods for a Limited-Edition Nakiri Knife Collaboration
Featuring a Gua Bao-style handle made from restaurant plastic waste.
British kitchenware company, Allday Goods has teamed up with BAO, London’s cult-fave Taiwanese restaurant chain to release a limited-edition Nakiri knife.
Spawned from a mutual mission to reuse waste and spent goods in the kitchen, the two parties united their know-how and passion to create a truly unique knife. Handmade in Sakai, Japan’s renowned city for high-grade handcrafted knives, the collaborative piece is hand-forged by the highly-regarded, fourth-generation knifemaker Yoshikazu Sakai. Each piece took around six months to craft, specifically its 160mm long, Nakiri-style blade that’s composed of Aogami 2 carbon steel.
BAO’s essence and playful aesthetics are implemented into the knife’s handle design. The handle takes the form of five Gua Bao buns, which have been custom-made from the restaurants’ plastic waste. Speaking on this design, BAO’s co-founder, Erchen Chang says, “I wanted to create a knife that is both sharp and soft, gentle and forceful. The design takes inspiration from Brancusi’s Endless Column sculpture because who doesn’t want a knife with a BAOcusi handle?”
“BAO is an iconic brand in the restaurant industry in London and we couldn’t be more excited to be working with them and turning their waste into a kitchen knife. I’ve never seen a knife like this before, and I can’t wait to see what people think of it,” comments Hugo Worsley, the founder of Allday Goods.
Limited to only 100 examples, the special-edition Nakiri Knife will retail for £230 GBP (approximately $292 USD). It will be available for order via Allday Goods’ online shop starting December 8, 2 p.m. GMT/ 9 a.m. EST.
