'Five Nights at Freddy's' Debuts With Impressive $130 Million USD in Global Box Office
Logging the second-biggest opening weekend for a video game adaptation.
Five Nights at Freddy’s tops the box office weekend with a global total of $130 million USD.
Earning $78 million USD domestically and $52 million USD in other territories, the title is 2023’s biggest horror debut so far, overtaking the likes of Scream VI and The Nun II. Five Nights at Freddy’s also logs the second-biggest opening weekend for a video game adaptation just behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie, is the biggest horror global opening of the year and has the second-biggest opening weekend for a day-and-date streaming release as it simultaneously premiered on NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service.
“The IP is ridiculously popular, and Blumhouse and our director Emma Tammi did an amazing job of translating that to the big screen,” said Universal’s president of domestic distribution Jim Orr. “The genre lends itself to people wanting to experience it together.”
Five Nights at Freddy’s is an adaptation of Scott Cawthon’s popular video game series and stars Josh Hutcherson as Mike Schmidt, a nighttime security guard at the abandoned Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza who discovers that the fuzzy, animatronic mascots are out for blood. Also joining the cast are Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, Mary Stuart Masterson and Matthew Lillard.
Elsewhere in entertainment, Prime Video’s Fallout adaptation received a premiere date.
