After co-founding Peckham’s Frank’s Café and The Camberwell Arms, restauranteur James Dye was ready for a new venture. That impulse – to continuously explore the intersection of design, food and drinks – led to him launching Bambi, a new wine bar and restaurant that places music at the forefront.

Located in the city’s London Fields, Bambi is named after Dye’s own grandmother and will be headed up by chef Henry Freestone, who also happens to be his childhood best friend. Eats follow Freestone’s ethos of “casual, fun food” and make use of locally sourced produce.

Sample dishes for the menu include cauliflower cheese arancini, a smoked mackerel pate with pickled cucumbers, chicken parm ciabatta and vodka marinara and more. As for dessert, the chef will offer dedham vale rump with lemon and confit garlic, a dark chocolate and ginger profiterole and an apple crumble sundae

During the day, the space will be open for coffee and deli-style sandwiches. Come the evening, it’ll operate as a wine bar and full restaurant but after dinner service ends, Bambi will be transformed into a makeshift musical venue, hosting a roster of resident DJs. The space features a custom-built wall of vinyl records, along with a vintage high-fidelity sound system. Attica Blues member Charlie Dark will be curating the record collection by hand, drawing on his decades of experience as a DJ and musician.

While the kitchen is open daily, the wine bar and full restaurant are only open Wednesday through Sunday. Those eager to visit Bambi won’t have to wait long, as the space opens its doors this Friday, October 6.
