It's All in the Details for Matthew M Williams' 1017 ALYX 9SM FW23 Collection
Collaborating with Mark Flood to plaster graphics and phrases across multiple looks.
Matthew M Williams continues to define his own streetwear aesthetic, putting his label 1017 ALYX 9SM firmly on the map with his latest Milan Fashion Week runway show.
Dividing his time between his self-founded label and heading up Givenchy as its Creative Director, MMW resumes his restless exploration into fashion with the debut of 1017 ALYX 9SM Fall/Winter 2023. The previous season saw Williams decode modern streetwear ideals through a runway show titled “MOTION,” taking attendees to an unused swimming pool on the outskirts of Milan. With collaborations alongside Nike, Swedish House Mafia, and more, it was only fitting he’d follow up with more double-ended creativity.
Teaming up with KALEIDOSCOPE and the Houston-based artist Mark Flood for an exhibition at Spazio Maiocchi, the trio presented walls covered in Flood’s latest work. From his signature pixelated effects to propaganda-like prints and surreal advertisements, it acted as the perfect backdrop for MMW’s streetwear-tinged luxury.
As for the collection, 1017 ALYX 9SM delivered a mixture of themes — but all were rooted in a sort of teenage anarchy. Oversized branding on the rear of faux fur jackets and angsty graphic typefaces by Flood flashed before your eyes as models stomped on a mission.
Causing the noise was the new range of boots, which happened to be one of the strongest parts of the collection. Some were spiked, grungy and punkish, others bulbous and rounded, or detailed with worn-in effects. This contrasted the cowboy boots seen on women, which sported exposed metal caps peeking through turned-up leather, or others in silver with Flood’s text all over them.
In contrast, slim jeans were paired with the oversized military boots, and sportswear — such as track jackets hit with neon pops — or tight sports tops only added to the multidimensional MMW world. For womenswear, MMW pointed to his learning from Givenchy with subverted tailoring as blazers doubled as a full outfit, oversized so much it consumed the body.
