Bode Finds Comfort in Her Old Lower East Side Apartment for Spring 2023

Knitwear, crochet and pajamas reign supreme.

For Spring 2023, Emily Adams Bode Aujla returned to where it all began: 29 Clinton Street. After showing a line inspired by the memories of the brand’s founding Lower East Side apartment last season, this collection is galvanized by the downtown New York crib’s homey atmosphere with a bevy of comfort-first silhouettes.

The label, known for its antique inspirations, technical applications, intricate embroidery and heavy pigmentations, lets knitwear take the lead in a way that is distinctly Bode. Blending age-old textiles into masterfully-cut arrangements of bed linens, delicate suedes and vivid quilts, the designer unveils intarsia cardigans and crochet polos inspired by the imprint’s archives but reenvisioned with more breathable yarns.

There’s an emphasis on pajamas, a silhouette that Bode has evidently favored in its recent collections. One set arrives in cream with white piping and others appear in lavender and white-on-black — but they’re not just meant for sleeping. Styled with collared shirts, ties, printed button-downs and crochet vests, Bode proves that there’s much more to be done in the nightclothes category.

A long-sleeve polo shirt reads “Hester” across its chest, presumably nodding to the neighborhood’s street of the same moniker, and a red sweater makes a novel statement: “EVERYONE NEEDS SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN RIGHT NOW I BELIEVE I’LL HAVE ANOTHER BEER.” Elsewhere, horse lovers might enjoy a button-down shirt covered in stallion illustrations; or, perhaps, an intarsia knit sweater and pants set embroidered with the animal might pique their interest.

It’s a cozy conclusion to the brand’s at-home collections. Next season, Admas Bode Aujla will return to Paris, where she will stage her first runway show since 2020.
