When Daniel Craig announced that his 15-year run as the titular 007 agent James Bond was coming to an end, it ignited one of the biggest questions within the entertainment industry. Many fans have wondered who would fill his shoes as the next British agent, with many hoping Idris Elba would take on the role.

However, in a new interview on Uninterrupted’s The Shop, Elba spoke about his ultimate choice to remove himself from the running for the role of Bond. In the latest episode of the series, he spoke about how playing the role of Bond was “not a goal for my career.” He added, “I don’t think that, you know, playing Bond will satisfy some of my personal goals. It will definitely satisfy the will of a nation.” He expanded on his thoughts and continued to explain why he was not pressed to fight for the role,

“I’m not gonna lie, every corner of the world I go, and I’m talking about different cultures, they always go, ‘Bond.’ And I feel it is beyond me at this junction. It’s beyond me.

You know, it’s not a question of, should I, do I, will I? It is what the will of the nation dictates sometimes. I’m not that guy but in everyone’s world, I might be. And that, job done. Because the truth is, you know, a lot of people are really seeing Idris playing Bond as the alternative Bond. And as long as that alternative is existing, that’s great for the growth of f**king casting.”
