Lionsgate has unveiled the first official trailer for Above the Below, an upcoming aquatic survival thriller co-directed by and starring Idris Elba. The preview establishes a high-tension scenario following a catastrophic crash-landing into the ocean.
Co-directed by Elba alongside Martin Owen and written by Elizabeth Morris, Matthew Mitchell, and Vicki Sargent, the film also stars Caitlin FitzGerald and Hero Fiennes Tiffin. According to Lionsgate’s synopsis, the plot kicks off after three astronauts survive an orbital disaster in space, only to find themselves trapped within their submerged capsule deep in the ocean with lost contact to mission control and rapidly depleting oxygen reserves.
Discussing the physical production, Elba revealed to Collider that the filmmakers leaned heavily on practical effects rather than digital shortcuts, “I’m very excited to show people that I can hold my breath for four minutes. Joking aside (I can hold my breath for that long), but you know, this film was very practical,” Elba said. “We did a lot of the things in this film. We did build the spacecraft, we submerged it in water, we shot a lot of it underwater. There’s a real practicality to this film that adds to the claustrophobia and the thriller aspect of it. So I’m really excited for people to literally go on that journey with us, from space to the ocean, and be entertained, be thrilled, and be claustrophobic.”
