While one season remains before the official conclusion of Stranger Things, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer are already developing a spinoff to the flagship show. But in response to rumors that the forthcoming series will center on existing characters from the original show, the Duffer Brothers have revealed that the spinoff will have a much more distant connection to its predecessor.
“It’s not following…I’ve read these rumors that there’s gonna be an Eleven spinoff, that there’s gonna be a Steve and Dustin spinoff or that it’s another number,” the Duffer Brothers recently said during an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast. “That’s not interesting to me because we’ve done all that. We’ve spent I don’t know how many hours exploring all of that. So it’s very different.”
The Duffer Brothers then confirmed that the spinoff series will be “1000% different” to Stranger Things, noting that the connecting factor will not be the flagship characters but the upcoming show’s “storytelling sensibility.”
“There is story that connects to the Stranger Things world, but it really is more about how we’re telling that story,” they said.
Interestingly, the Duffer Brothers are developing the series with the intention of handing off directing duties to a new showrunner. “Hopefully we find that right person to pass the baton to while we go on to do new stuff,” they added, before stating that Netflix still doesn’t know what they have planned for the spinoff.
