Before growing into the world’s most valuable luxury brand, Louis Vuitton began as a small luggage and packing shop located near the Place Vendome in Paris. The label’s early flat-topped canvas steamer trunks allowed travelers to stack their luggage, defying the conventional dome-shaped design at the time, and the shop steadily grew its reputation as a producer of quality leather travel goods and wardrobes.

Along with custom vanity cases that held jewelry, champagne, chess, and more, Louis Vuitton created its first mahjong travel trunk in the 1950s featuring satin-lined interior compartments that held the game’s full set of 144 tiles with five extras, four wooden rulers, dice, wind indicator, and sticks. The streamlined six-drawer box set is trimmed in natural cowhide, rich pine green lining, monogrammed canvas exteriors, and gold brass fasteners. The carved tiles consist of stone and American walnut and are hand-painted with elements of LV’s signature floral motifs.

Take a closer look at Louis Vuitton’s latest Mahjong set above.
