Daniel Arsham Presents 'Le Modulor du Basketball' at MAMO

Following the launch of his Objects IV Life label, Daniel Arsham heads to Marseille, France to present a site-specific exhibition titled Le Modulor du Basketball on the rooftop of MAMO – Cité Radieuse Arts Center founded by Ora Ito.

Arsham is currently serving as the creative director of the Cleveland Cavaliers, and has a strong interest in sporting objects, personified through the special-edition Tiffany & Co. Basketball, and more recently, an eroded helmet sculpture in collaboration with Lewis Hamilton. For his latest Le Modulor du Basketball installation, the New York-based artist pays homage to architect Le Corbusier. Arsham reimagines the old gymnasium space at the Cité Radieuse (Unité d’ Habitation), referencing the colors of Le Corbusier’s historic residential building and the proportions presented in “The Modulor.”

“In consonance with the history of the building, Arsham considers Corbusier’s scale through showcasing the linear aspect of time, and how scale can expand and grow. The court floor mirrors the pastel yellows and blues seen in Corbusier’s Le Poeme de L’angle Droit (1955), along with the original sun detail, transformed into representations of basketballs found on banners, a flag, team uniforms and the court itself,” co-presenter Galerie Perrotin writes in a press release. “Arsham’s signature erosion technique is applied to basketball racks referencing the silhouettes of Corbusier’s iconic lounge chairs and a basketball hoop inspired by Corbusier’s Open Hand symbol.”

Heading outside to the MAMO roof terrace, Arsham showcases a range of bronze sculptures depicting Greek and Roman antiquities alongside his life-sized crystal-eroded DeLorean.

The Le Modulor du Basketball exhibition is now open and will run until September 25.
