This New Documentary Offers a Look Into the Making of Nintendo 64 Cult Shooter ‘GoldenEye 007’
Inspired by the 1995 James Bond film.
Altitude Films has paid tribute to the classic Nintendo 64 shooter GoldenEye 007 in a new documentary.
Directed by Drew Roller, GoldenEra tells the inspiring story of the game’s creation leading up to its release during the summer of 1997. The film arrives on the 25th anniversary of GoldenEye 007’s launch.
The game was inspired by the James Bond movie GoldenEye, tasking the player with controlling the agent in a single-player campaign to stop a criminal from using a satellite weapon against the city of London.
“Developed in a farmhouse in Warwickshire by a small ragtag team of university graduates, most of whom had never worked on a game before, this iconic first-person shooter surpassed all expectations and went on to change gaming forever,” the documentary’s synopsis reads.
In the decades since its release, GoldenEye 007 has cemented itself as a cult classic. It debuted as the third-best-selling Nintendo 64 game in history and has been cited as a turning point in the shooter genre for its complex storyline, various gameplay modes and realism.
For GoldenEra, documentarians tapped the makers behind the original game, as well as gaming journalists and industry professionals.
