The film adaptation of Nintendo‘s Super Mario Bros. video game series has been postponed to 2023.

Game creator Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed the news on Twitter, addressing fans via the Nintendo of America account. “This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America,” he tweeted, referring to producer Chris Meledandri as Chris-san. “My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait.”

The upcoming adaptation will be helmed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and will feature a star-studded cast, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike, while the original Mario voice actor Charles Martinet will return for a cameo role.

Elsewhere in entertainment, The Batman earned the second-highest first week viewership for a theatrical film on HBO Max.
