Having already created an anime series based on its massively popular Star Wars franchise, Disney is now looking to create more anime content for its streaming service Disney+.

Calling anime a “focus area,” the company’s Japan head of animation Takuto Yawata says that he is confident the genre “will open a new door” for Disney+ and that “We have great expectations for producing local content. this includes completely new works from Japan.” He added that the integrity of the content will also be respected, and the shows won’t be changed to appeal more to western audiences: “We deeply respect the works of Japanese creators, and we will transmit them overseas just the way they are.”

The comments come shortly after Netflix revealed its own viewership for anime across 2021. According to the company’s creative director of anime Kohei Obara, a whopping 90% of its Japanese subscribers tuned in to at least one anime series over the year, with more than 50% of global audiences doing the same.

In other related news, Pacific Rim: The Black has released a trailer for its second and final season.
