Ahead of the highly anticipated release of Matt ReevesThe Batman, the director sat down with Variety to discuss how he came about the project and how he shot the film during lockdown.

Making the film was no easy feat, with his star Caped Crusader, Robert Pattinson testing positive for COVID-19 during shooting with three-quarters of The Batman left to film. There was fear that the team would lose yet another key member after dialect coach Andrew Jack died at 76 in late March 2020 due to COVID. Despite the complications brought on by the pandemic, Reeves was on track to make his DC Comics debut. Recently, the film recently received a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, giving fans a boost of confidence on what to expect. Though Reeves has received a certified fresh rating, it does not negate the fact that he believes he would still not be able to make a good Marvel film.

In the interview, Reeves said, “I have such respect for Kevin Feige and also for the [Marvel] filmmakers.” He then candidly added, “But to be honest with you, I just don’t know how I would make my way through that. There has to be some level of discovery for me, where I have some freedom to find my way. If I have to come into something that’s already set too firmly, then I think I would get lost. And I don’t think they would be happy with me either.”

It turns out, Reeves was unsure about taking on The Batman either. He revealed that Warner Bros. continued to call him about helming the next Batman film, to which he was “almost getting annoyed.” Of course, with the imminent release of The Batman, Reeves later took a meeting with the studio and the rest became history. Reeves also currently overseas Gotham PD and The Penguin on HBO Max.

The Batman opens in theaters on March 4.
