Ascaso Gallery in Miami gathers four artists in curation of its “Cute Tunes for Serious Sapiens” exhibition which features a mix of viewpoints sharing similarities within explorations of their individual “inner child.” Navigating beyond traditional art methods and styles, the works are just as welcoming with a healthy balance of a playful aesthetic as well as fine art practices.

Works of Javier Martin, Masako Miki, Noritoshi Mitsuuchi and Takeru Amano are spread out within the airy bright space adding a rainbow of color to a completely clean white background. While the general influence of the whole is of Japanese anime and manga culture, the exhibition gives way to freedom of each of our childlike creativity sans restraint and lake of individuality.

Taking a look at each artist’s body of work, Takeru Amano paints his characters based on western art history in a Super-flat style over bright vibrant backgrounds. Javier Martin takes a different approach by utilizing different forms of mediums with the combination of paint, printmaking and strips of neon colors to create his “Blindness” portraits.

Noritoshi Mitsuuchi’s pieces take on Japan’s known “Kawaiism” culture with cartoon-like characters as if they were extracted from children’s books. Masako Miki constructed fun and vibrant sculptures which are not just to satisfy humor but mimic folklore creatures such as shapeshifters or yōkai found in Shintoism.

“Cute Tunes for Serious Sapiens” is now on view until April 28.
