"The Reach" Is The Macallan's Oldest Expression to Date
The $125,000 USD single malt is held up by three bronze hands.
The Macallan has just announced its oldest expression to date — The Reach.
The 81-year-old single malt scotch whiskey was distilled in 1940 and was crafted in a single sherry-seasoned oak cask. Celebrating the many hands that have toiled over this liquid gold, The Macallan has chosen to craft very specific Scottish-made packaging to represent this.
The Reach is housed in a hand-blown glass decanter that is cradled by three bronze hands that were sculped by Saskia Robinson. These three hands represent the three events that have transpired since The Reach was conceived — one hand commemorates the distillery workers of 1940 who crafted the spirit in challenging times, the other to Allan Shiach, whose grandfather headed the company when this spirit was first consigned to its cask, and lastly, one to represent Master Whisky Maker, Kirsteen Campbell, who carefully selected the special cask used to create The Reach. This combination of liquid, glass, and bronze is all housed in a specially-designed wooden cabinet.
The deep auburn-colored whiskey is described as having a nose of chocolate, sweet cinnamon, aromatic peat, plums, leather, pink grapefruit, redcurrant jelly, and a rich resinous note. The palate is of treacle toffee, bramble jam, licorice, crystallized ginger, nutmeg, charred pineapple, pecans, and woodsmoke. The finish is intensely rich, sweet, and smoky. Tying this all together, The Macallan created an original score for The Reach with the legendary Scottish post-rock band Mogwai.
Limited to 288 bottles, The Reach is priced at $125,000 USD.
