Nigel Cabourn’s affiliation with military clothing is second to none. Whether it’s his eponymous seasonal mainline collections that draw on the styles and palettes historically worn by the forces, or his recent work alongside Timex, Vault by Vans and Maison Mihara Yasuhiro which led to military-infused collaborations, Cabourn knows his stuff.

For Spring/Summer 2022, Cabourn is delving a little deeper back to 1968 to explore the story behind the epochal China Surf Beach Club. Host to thousands of US troops throughout the Vietnam War, My Khe Beach, Da Nang, became a major cultural and therapeutic outlet for young G.Is thanks to Larry Martin, a 22 year old Navy seaman.

Befriending the lifeguards, Martin was able to gain access to one of the six rescue boards for his own personal use. Realizing the potential benefits, Martin obtained permission from superior officers to organize a surf therapy refuge for soldiers returning from the front line. Dubbed China Beach Club, the location offered a place for rest and distraction from conflict, and soon became an unofficial U.S Military Association, running from 1968 to the end of the Vietnam War.

In a bid to capture this unique spirit, Cabourn has reworked a selection of garments for SS22. Classic American sportswear arrives in a dry weave organic loopback jersey, while key military styles like the Bush Jacket, Dutch Pant and Bush Shorts have been fabricated into a lightweight cotton. Camouflage patterns have been reimagined into a jungle-inspired color palette, while the signature Cabourn orange provides a seasonal pop of color.

The full SS22 collection is available to buy now from the Cabourn webstore.
