2022 Venice Biennale Artists Announced
The 59th edition showcases the most diverse list to date.
The upcoming 2022 Venice Biennale will feature the most diverse lineup in the event’s history. Organizers for the arts organization announced that the 213 artists to feature in the 59th edition, titled “The Milk of Dreams” will largely comprise of women and gender-nonconforming artists who seek to challenge “the figure of men as the center of the universe,” according to a statement by the event’s director, Cecilia Alemani.
As the event was closed due to the pandemic, Alemani had several years to ruminate on the purpose of the show, which serves as the longest-running survey on contemporary art. The title of the show, “The Milk of Dreams,” references a 1950s children’s book by Surrealist artist, Leonora Carrington, whom Alemani commended for describing “a world set free, brimming with possibilities.”
180 of the artists are making their Biennale debut, with Cameroon, Namibia, Nepal, Oman, and Uganda being represented for the first time. Additionally, the event’s international pavilions will showcase Kazakshstan, Kirghizistan, and Uzbekistan for the first time as well.
As the metaverse and emerging technologies continue to blur the lines between humans and technology, the 59th edition will also explore “the representation of bodies and their metamorphoses; the relationship between individuals and technologies; the connection between bodies and the Earth,” said Alemani. The 2022 Venice Biennale will run from April 23 to November 27, 2022. Please see the full list of exhibiting artists below.
