Ferrari Unveils Its 2023 Le Mans 499P Hypercar
Its first World Endurance Championship (WEC) entry in 50 years.
Ferrari has officially unveiled its all-new 499P LMH (Le Mans Hypercar) prototype set to compete in the 2023 World Endurance Championship (WEC). The name 499P follows a naming tradition dating back to Ferrari’s early days whereby the 499 represents the displacement of its six-cylinder engine in cubic centimeters and the “P” stands for prototype.
With the last Ferrari Le Mans WEC race being in 1972, it will be the first time in 50 years that the automaker’s motorsports division will participate in the highest class of endurance racing. Built on a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis, the Ferrari 499P is “wind designed” sporting a complex aerodynamic style enhanced by simple, sinuous shapes that echo Ferrari’s DNA.
Complying with the technical regulations of the race, the hypercar is powered by a hybrid powertrain combining a four-wheel drive, V6 bi-turbo engine with an electric motor delivering power to the front axle. The overall maximum power output is reported at 500 kW coupled with a seven-speed sequential gearbox.
“The 499 confirms our commitment to endurance racing, which is part of our history and part of a tradition of using this kind of competition to test new technologies,” says Ferrari racing boss Antonello Coletta, who describes the 499P as a “tribute to our past and a manifesto for our future.”
