New Balance Could Be Entering the Metaverse
Details have emerged regarding trademark filings for virtual goods.

Lately, the metaverse has gained a large interest from sportswear, sneaker, sports and apparel brands. Back in December 2021, adidas made its official debut in the metaverse as well as fashion luxury brand Balenciaga. Earlier this week, the Brooklyn Nets became the first professional sports team in American to join, evidently perpetuating the pattern and momentum of the metaverse. Now, it seems that New Balance is following in the footsteps of its peers, reportedly filing for trademarks that mark the brand’s attempt at pivoting into the virtual space.
Trademark attorney Josh Gerben took to Twitter to report that the Boston-based sportswear brand has filed for three trademarks as of January 13, 2021. The filings are said to allow New Balance to produce goods for the virtual world including its own branded products, specifically footwear, clothing and various sportswear accessories and equipment. Another portion of the trademark would allow for the aforementioned items to be used in virtual retail store services, while the third and final claim would allow New Balance to use these goods for entertainment purposes online.
New Balance has not yet confirmed its plans on entering the metaverse.
