It has long been rumored that critically-acclaimed director Christopher Nolan was planning on ending his 18-year partnership with Warner Bros. The reports first surfaced when Nolan was disappointed with the way the studio’s distribution decision of his film, TENET.

Deadline has now officially confirmed that Nolan’s next film project is set to be released by Universal, signalling that he is parting ways with his longtime collaborators after nearly two decades. The next film from the director will center around the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer’s involvement in developing the atom bomb.

The film is expected to star Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy and will begin production in early 2022. Since 2002, every film of Nolan’s has been released and distributed by Warner Bros. Amongst those included the entirety of The Dark Knight trilogy as well as Inception. Nolan’s decision to move to Universal does not come as a surprise as the director has recently been vocal about criticizing Warner Bros. plans to release his films simultaneously on its streaming services.

Warner Bros. recently also confirmed that it plans to return to traditional cinema releases for 2022. However, it appears that the promise is not enough to make Nolan continue his partnership with the studio.

In other entertainment news, Idris Elba is slated to return as the protagonist for Netflix’s Luther film.
