At E3 2021, Square Enix revealed Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin, a thrilling spinoff of the original 1987 Final Fantasy, developed by veterans Tetsuya Nomura and Kzushige Nojima in partnership with Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo Games.

The newly released trailer showcases the game’s penchant for action, highlighting a trio of “Warriors of Light” who face off against a variety of vicious creatures and foes, before eventually engaging in battle with the evil knight Garland from the original game.

The gaming company’s official description of the game reads: “Jack and his allies, Ash and Jed, burn with resolve to defeat Chaos as they throw open the gates to the Chaos Shrine. Yet doubts remain—are they truly the Warriors of Light the prophecy foretold? Step into a world of dark fantasy and revel in the exhilarating, action-packed battles.”

A limited-time demo version of the game is available to download on the PlayStation Store now. Inside the trial, which will remain available on PlayStation 5 through June 24, players can explore the renovated fantasy world and battle a multitude of signature monsters from the franchise using powerful spells and updated fighting abilities.

“While it is Final Fantasy, it feels different—but there’s no doubt that the blood of Final Fantasy runs through its veins,” said Tetsuya Nomura, Creative Producer for Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin, in a statement.“We’ve undertaken the challenge of finding this difficult middle ground for this mature and stylish title. We need a little time until we’re able to complete it, and while the battle system is a bloody one, it does link to the story, so I hope you’ll use this opportunity to give it a try.”

The game is scheduled to officially launch in 2022 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X.

In more E3 news, Nintendo announced that Metroid Dread is headed to Switch with two-dimensional alien battles.
