Skira Art Books recently unveiled a new illustrated publication that explores the relationship between basketball and contemporary art. Entitled Common Practice, the comprehensive tome shed lights on over a century of artwork from over 200 leading artists including Nina Chanel Abney, Emma Amos, Romare Bearden, Salvador Dalí, Elaine de Kooning, Keith Haring, David Hammons, KAWS and more.

Common Practice is the first illustrated publication to analyze this overlap between art and sport. “This book argues that the need to rehearse, discover and explore through the act of doing makes these two very different ideas of perfecting one’s craft very similar,” as per a description.

The book features statements by visual artist Carlos Rolón who is best known for his interdisciplinary practice that explores themes of craft, ritual, beauty, spirituality and identity. Also included in the book are writings by Dan Peterson who is the founder of Project Backboard — a non-profit organization dedicated to renovating basketball courts and improving public spaces statewide.

Check out images of the book above and expect Common Practice to release at select retailers and ArtBook.com this May.

Elsewhere in art, one of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s famous skull paintings is expected to fetch over $50 million USD at upcoming Christie’s sale.
