This Is the First-Ever McLaren P1, and It Could Be Yours

The McLaren P1 is a rare beast by all means, but could you imagine owning the very first production model built? Well, Silverstone Auctions might be able to help with that, as it is due to sell No. 1 of 375 P1s at its upcoming May Sale 2021 — Classic Cars and Classic Motorcycles auction.

This is the very first customer-registered P1 and is served in the signature colorway of “Volcano Yellow” with a black leather interior and Alcantara dashboard. It was delivered new from McLaren to a customer in the U.K. and has since accumulated just 3,666 miles on the odometer in its eight years being on the road (or should we say, being mostly securely stored).

For those unaware, the McLaren P1 was a game-changing car for the British marque. It, alongside the Ferrari LaFerrari and Porsche 918, formed a contemporary “Holy Trinity” of new-generation mild-hybrid hypercars, and the McLaren is — to some — the undisputed champion of the three.

It is powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 with a lightweight electric motor, which combined produces 903 BHP and 664 lb-ft of torque. 62 MPH is hit in just 2.8 seconds, 124 MPH is achieved in 6.8 seconds, 186 MPH in 16.5 seconds, and it will continue onwards to a top speed of 217 MPH with ease.

The car is made almost entirely from carbon fiber to reduce weight (the monocoque chassis weighs just 90kg), while elements such as an unlacquered carbon fiber cockpit resulted in 1.5kg of weight saving. Elsewhere, McLaren saved 3.5kg by adding a 3.2-mm thick windscreen that’s reinforced with a thick plastic interlayer, and altogether the P1 tips the scales as a minute 1,395kg.
