New Balance's 990v5 Goes Off-Road with New "Trail" Makeup
Featuring a reinforced cushioning system and lugged rubber outsole.

As the latest model in the legendary 990 series, New Balance‘s 990v5 has seen a cornucopia of compelling made in the USA styles since its 2019 debut. Its new “Trail” makeup, however, differs from its predecessors in one major way: it was designed for any and all excursions off the beaten path.
Most trail-geared iterations of popular footwear silhouettes boast several core differences from their corresponding in-line model, but the 990v5 “Trail” presents its only notable difference on its bottom half via a lugged black rubber outsole that provides all-terrain grip. According to New Balance, the ENCAP cushioning system — denoted by blue foam among the midsole’s black and cream shades — has been slightly tweaked as well for enhanced comfort.
Uppers largely replicate the midsole’s colorblocking, mixing gray and black mesh with gray suede overlays. There’s a healthy helping of blue accents as well, namely on the toebox, collar and heel. A large black N logo trimmed with silver hits the quarter panel, and black tongues feature a special silver Made In the USA badge to complete the look.
The New Balance 990v5 “Trail” is currently available on the New Balance webstore. The MSRP is set at $180 USD.
