Ken Griffey Jr.'s Nike Air Griffey Max 1 is Back in "Varsity Royal"
A beloved colorway of The Kid’s most famous signature sneaker makes its return.

Only a short list of baseball players have been blessed with their own signature shoe, and no signature baseball offerings have been more impactful than Ken Griffey Jr. and Nike‘s efforts — namely the Air Griffey Max 1. Now, the Griffey Max 1 has returned in a familiar “Varsity Royal” makeup, following up Nike Sportswear‘s revival of the memorable Air Griffey Max 1 “Freshwater” in recent months.
A rich navy blue may have been the signature tone of Griffey’s Seattle Mariners, but the “Varsity Royal” opts for blue that’s a few shades lighter and places it on the nubuck mudguards, toebox overlays, eyestays and heels. All of these pieces surround a white leather base, further embellished with a black Swoosh on the lateral forefoot.
The throat and tongue are both done up in black, and secured by what’s arguably the Air Griffey Max 1’s signature detail: a large collar strap with puffy Nike branding and a #24 hit on its rubberized anchor. Here, this assemblage is done up in blue and boasts white numbers plus a small volt Swoosh. A larger volt Swoosh appears on the heel, with more neon gracing the tongue tab and lowest eyestay. Down below, midsoles encase volt Air units in a mixture of white and black EVA foam. Black outsoles round off the look.
Griffey Jr.’s Nike Air Griffey Max 1 “Varsity Royal” has yet to receive an official release date, but if the rollout of the “Freshwater” is any indication, it’ll likely trickle out to select stockists in the coming weeks before its “official” arrival. The MSRP is set at $170 USD.
