IISE Celebrates Traditional Korean Art in SS21 Collection

Inspired by the ’70s Dansaekhwa movement.

Back for Spring/Summer, South Korean label IISE has now returned with a seasonal range that explores its cultural roots with the Dansaekhwa movement (literally translated as monochrome painting), a flourished art style in the Korean arts during the ’70s. Artists back then focused more on creating monochromatic pieces with an emphasis on layering, brush strokes, and materials.

This traditional art form is transformed into the assemblage corresponding to Dansaekhwa art pieces — all using Korean fabrics and traditional methods. The minimalistic pattern of gray, black and cream is transferred to button-up shirts, T-shirts and shorts. Often used to replace the canvas, wrinkled Korean paper is recreated in the flannel shirt with ombré plaid. Referencing the addition of ink in the artwork, IISE smudges ink over the camp shirts and shorts. Sleek accessories such as bandana and navy hats can be found to round up the monochromatic collection.

The new SS21 collection is now available through the IISE’s website.
