BMW 4-Series Convertible Launched With Near M4-Level Performance

While we wait for the M4 Convertible, BMW’s M440i xDrive will do just fine.

BMW‘s new M3 and M4 is controversial for many reasons — namely their snarling kidney grille and V6 engine — and now the German automotive company has unveiled its latest work: the BMW 4-Series Convertible.

Much like the aforementioned M4, the 4-Series Convertible is fitted with that divisive front end. However, unlike the M4, it is much rounder and less aggressively-styled, making everything from the front end to the hood, sides, and rear, a bit softer.

It comes in a number of versions, from the standard M Sport drop-top to the M Sport “Pro Edition” that adds just a little bit more oomph and styling. However, BMW will also launch the 4-Series Convertible with a new flagship model, dubbed the M440i xDrive.

The M440i xDrive will sit underneath the (predictably soon-coming) BMW M4 Convertible, delivering 369 BHP from its V6 engine. It will drive this power through all four wheels via an eight-speed gearbox, and will hit 0-62 MPH in just 4.9 seconds before going onto a limited top speed of 155 MPH.

In addition to this, the top-spec models will have a long list of optional extras that you can tick to make your 4-Series Convertible even sportier. For example, BMW now offers a stiffer M Sport suspension including variable sport steering, adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers, M Sport brakes with a choice of blue or red brake calipers, and an M Sport differential that electronically locks the rear, making it feel like a rear-wheel-drive car when needed.

Elsewhere, you can fit the car with carbon exterior and M Performance parts on the outside, as well as 19-inch alloy rims. Some of these optional extras will be applicable to the rest of the 4-Series Convertible line-up, which includes a 420i, a 430i, a 420d, a 430d, and a twin-turbo M440d that can go from 0-62 MPH in 5.1 seconds thanks to it delivering 516 lb-ft of torque.

The base BMW 4-Series Convertible 420i M Sport will cost from £45,785 GBP in the U.K. (approx. $58,000 USD), while the top-spec M440i xDrive will cost from £59,645 GBP (approx. $76,500 USD). Take a closer look at the BMW 4-Series Convertible above, and expect to see these on the road from March 2021.

In other news, BMW M is developing an EV based on the i4.
